Chapter 13
Over the mummy’s chest, images took shape. Pyramids formed, then melted into rolling sand dunes. People in strange clothing and robes walked through bazaars, buildings, and burial places. But the images came too fast, overlaying each other so quickly they began to blur.
Then the images shifted, showing a group of men and women in purple uniforms. Strange machines surrounded them. A man pointed to one of the windows on the table in front of him.
Looking at the screen through the image, Matt saw a blazing comet streaking through the heavens. Then the images went black and skipped again. This time the perspective took place on a battlefield that could have been in Egypt. Men fought on foot and from two-wheeled horse-drawn chariots, using bows and curved swords and spears. At least two great armies fought and dozens of men died, cut down like wheat before a scythe.
“We are peering back into time,” Narada whispered in awe.
“Three thousand years,” Paul agreed. “Perhaps more.”
The images sped up and blurred again. Several scenes, throne rooms as well as construction sites and ships, paraded through the air above the mummy.
“These are things Pasebakhaenniut saw,” Matt said. “You were right, Emma. This is some kind of record.”
“This is a log,” Emma said. “Instead of keeping a journal, the man used this device to record things he saw and took part in.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know,” Emma said. “Even more important, where did he get the apparatus to do such a thing? We still haven’t mastered enough science to do this.”
No one had an answer.
“But why does Creighdor want it?” Matt asked.
“The knowledge alone to build such a device is worth a fortune,” Paul said.
Abruptly the scene changed. A strangely shaped craft plunged from the sky, leaving a burning trail behind it. The vessel slammed into the earth and disappeared in a cloud of dust and debris.
The image changed again, becoming a map. Then a glowing red dot formed on the map’s terrain.
“A treasure map?” Gabriel breathed.
“Or the site where that strange ship crashed,” Paul said.
“A flying ship,” Emma said in wonderment. “A flying ship! That thing exists!”
“Maybe not,” Matt said, feeling excitement stirring within him. “That recording, if that’s what this is, is at least three thousand years old.”
“But could that ship be what Creighdor is after?” Paul asked. He studied the glowing map.
Matt stepped closer to the images playing in the air above the mummy’s still chest. Tentatively, he poked his fingers into the image. The hair along the back of his arm stood at attention.
“A static electricity discharge.” Obviously amazed herself, Emma stuck her fingers into the image too.
Then the scene changed again, rushing past the map and showing some of the same sequences of events again. The images continued to flow, bending around their fingers and hands. The speed fluctuated, increasing and decreasing in a matter of seconds. Long periods of blackness threaded through the action.
“Gaps in the log?” Paul asked.
“Possibly,” Emma admitted. “Three thousand years is a long time, and the mummy was subjected to a lot of mishandling even before you sawed its head off.
